what was the last 10 years charter school has become sort of a household word we're going to find out why where they came from have they started and what you should do about oh nice what you should know about them in February of 1998 we made application to start the school and in September 1998 we opened our doors with over 500 kids in grades K-2 for every year thereafter we added on great 6th grade 7th grade 8th grade at the request of parents citizens why Charter Schools were developed in the first place was to give parents a better choice for educating kids if they were not able to afford private school or Catholic school or any other kind of school that they had to pay for and they were satisfied with their neighborhood school they had no choices charter schools give parents and Alternate choice to bring your kids into a environment where they can be educated and is also had some problems with some of the charter schools we've had some problems around more of the in my opinion running the business side of a charter school not in educating the children in the school or providing a culture or a safe environment for them this year 73% of charter schools made average yearly progress which is the requirement under No Child Left Behind only 41% of the personal Public Schools made that same ayp goal so we are doing making a difference in education but there two pieces to a charter school which traditional schools operators don't have to experience there is a central office for traditional Public Schools it's called the school district of Philadelphia located at Broad and Spring Garden where they have many many people and many many offices that operate each piece of what goes on in running a school charter school is their own central office we don't have a brother at the Bucks absolutely we have to worry about the academic side of the house and we have to also worried about the business side of the house. Think about it as a Traditional School principal which most of the individuals who immediately newly found Charter Schools how much business experience have they had in doing budgets and hiring staff and making sure you have show all requirements and all of your compliances they didn't have to do that because they always had a central office that did that for them my Xperia coming into coming from an operational business background is that I've had that experience so I can ensure that the operational side of the house meaning fiscal budgets all of those things are done properly because I have the knowledge to do so the schools that have gotten themselves in trouble I think are mostly those package was definitely on the management side alright so there's no control on that end of it I mean when you open a school you just open it there aren't you have to make application in that application probably contains two to three hundred pieces of paper of everything you have to show what you're going to do what's your what what population are you aimed at who are you know what kind of staff are you going to hire what is your curriculum what are you teaching these kids all of that is required but we get we get re-evaluated every 5 years so from the first year you've opened to five years later if something is going wrong nobody's looking at it until the time it's for rechartering and now things have gone wrong in that process now you're discovering it actually in year 2 something was going wrong but there was nobody looking so I assume then that the charter schools need a little more prevent Supervision in our area they need more training and now what's happening as with everything across the were more and more compliance requirements are happening so but because of the Federal Department of Education with these title funds and how monies are flung all of that compliance is coming down hard on everybody what charter schools in specifically because we have left staff but we we are could we have to meet the same requirements as a traditional public school district has to so what's more training is required not death necessarily more micromanagement but we have to have training and that training needs to be the across the board for all leaders of schools whether they are principles in a traditional charter school or a CEO like myself in in this environment so let's get rid of public schools now well parents still need a choice all public schools aren't bad all public schools aren't bad and for those that are need to have an opportunity to send your kids somewhere else and if they can't afford to pay for school they need to be able to get Pub free public schooling for their kids some parents with Ben even choose to do homeschooling a lot more homeschooling is going on these days as well safety of a school I like the fact that I make a difference to children  background swirl in a week San Diego influence like a family so all public schools aren't bad all Charter Schools aren't good there is a balance between the two and the do we both get a sense though should be similar should be equal absolutely and that's not happening right now that's not happening right now do you emphasize on your school we emphasize Science and Technology as the main to focuses for how we like to see our children Prosper when they leave here science focused on any of the Sciences Health Care professions research any of those areas we focus on in our curriculum as well as technology classroom at West Oak Lane your school my class has been working they may never visually get to see or physically go but they still know about and that's through technology technology is driving the way our our our children will prosper in this world what makes your school safe you talked about it safe environment we create a family environment where every staff member focuses on every student 3 day and they need to understand that we are more to a student than just a teacher we armentors and we are role models for some of our students coming to this school is the best part of your day and we create that for them some of our students the lunch and breakfast be provided will they get it  when they come here they know that nobody can walk in the door then without being signed in by the security guard and we're in the back to know that they have the clearances to walk into this building and interact with any of our children and the biggest thing is kids you always know that somebody cares about them and somebody loves them and they can prosper among any other thing that's going on in there were outside of the school they can come in the school
