The WOLCS Scholars’ Club has had a very busy and exciting year! The mission of this elite program is to empower high-achieving West Oak Lane Charter School students by exposing them to new experiences, developing their critical thinking skills through interest-based creative learning, and fostering a college-bound mindset. Selected students in grades 4-8 meet together once a week after school build these concepts.
One way the Scholars’ Club achieves this is through a program called Destination Imagination (www.destinationimagination.org). From their website: The Destination Imagination program is a fun, hands-on system of learning that fosters students’ creativity, courage and curiosity through open-ended academic challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts and service learning. The participants learn patience, flexibility, persistence, ethics, respect for others and their ideas, and the collaborative problem solving process.
Students broke into four teams and solved these creative challenges during their after school time. On Saturday, April 7th, the scholars traveled to Elizabethtown, PA, to compete in the Destination Imagination Regional Tournament. They had outstanding results! The fine arts team won third place in their division, the scientific team won second, and the engineering and improvisation teams won first place. Congratulations to our scholars!
