Scholarship Program

We are proud to announce the second year of our WOLCS Scholarship Program. This program will provide financial assistance to support alumni students (graduates of WOLCS) pursuing college and/or career training programs. We realize that finances are often a barrier to completing academic programs; therefore, we hope students who are in financial need will be encouraged to apply for these scholarships. Scholarship checks for the students who are selected will be sent directly to the financial aid officer at the institution to preferably cover tuition costs, but can also be applied to books and fees.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be a graduate of West Oak Lane Charter School.
  • Applicant must be either completing high school or a current college student enrolled in or accepted in an accredited college or university program.
  • Applicant must be matriculating during the applicable academic school year.
  • Applicant must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduates on a scale or four (4.0).
  • Applicant must submit an essay as described in the application requirements.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Previous scholarship applicants can re-apply, however, previous scholarship award winners are not eligible to re-apply.

Application Requirements

Please submit only one application and indicate your scholarship of interest (See Scholarships of Interest attached.) Please note: Incomplete Applications will not be considered!

  • Scholarship Application Form
  • Personal Statement (up to 3 pages, double spaced, 12-point font, 1-inch margins) Please describe self, career goals, commitment and interests, description of how you feel your character and aspirations match up with the individual associated with the scholarship you are applying for, as well as how your WOLCS experience has prepared you for success.
  • Official High School or College Transcript(s) from all Institutions
  • Current Resume
  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation (according to the enclosed guidelines).
  • Applicant must personally accept scholarship award at the WOLCS Annual Scholarship Fundraiser on May 21, 2020

The Sharmain Matlock-Turner Academic Achievement Award

The Sharmain Matlock-Turner Award is bestowed upon a WOLCS alumni who is currently an outstanding high school student who is striving to become a future leader in community & economic development and/or education. Mrs. Matlock-Turner’s legacy has been her unwavering commitment and dedication to improving the futures of the city’s children through academic enrichment, technology and innovation. For 20 years, she has given of her time, talent and treasure to WOLCS. The Award contribution is $2500.00 and is awarded to a senior high school student accepted to an accredited university/college OR a WOLCS alumni currently attending an accredited university/college to help defer the tuition costs for the 2020-2021 academic year.


The Congressman Dwight Evans Public Service Award

The Congressman Dwight Evans Award was established to recognize outstanding achievements among WOLCS alumni who are striving to become future leaders in public policy and/or public education. Congressman Evans has dedicated his life to the cause of urban renewal, working tirelessly to provide economic and education opportunity to those who too often live in the shadows, the poor and underserved. The Award contribution is $2500.00 and is awarded to a WOLCS alumni currently attending an accredited
university/college OR a WOLCS alumni currently attending an accredited university/college to help defer the tuition costs for the 2020-2021 academic year.

 

The Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation Community (OARC) Service Award

The Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation (OARC) Award is bestowed upon a WOLCS alumni who is currently an outstanding high school student who is pursuing careers in Community Development with an emphasis on Finance, Economic and Housing Development. Ogontz Avenue Revitalization Corporation (OARC) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) community development corporation founded in 1983 by a group of community leaders and Pennsylvania State Representative Dwight Evans. OARC's mission is to create and stimulate sustainable economic development through innovative and creative use of our available resources while improving the quality of life for residents in West Oak Lane and other neighborhoods throughout the Northwest section of Philadelphia. The Dr. Debbera Peoples-Lee Make A Difference Award

The Dr. Debbera Peoples-Lee Award was established to recognize outstanding achievements among WOLCS alumni who are striving to become future leaders and make a difference in the fields of health administration, public health or public education. Dr. Peoples-Lee has led WOLCS with tremendous passion and optimism. She is a woman of purpose who is dedicated to touching the lives of both students and adults in positive and meaningful ways. The Award contribution is $2500.00 and is awarded to a senior high school student accepted to an accredited university/college to help defer the tuition costs for the 2020-2021 academic year.


The Chestnut Hill College Partnership Award

The Chestnut Hill College Partnership Award was established to recognize outstanding achievements among WOLCS alumni students who are striving to become future leaders. The Award contribution is $2500.00 and is awarded to a senior high school student accepted to or a current student attending Chestnut Hill College to help defer the tuition costs for the 2020-2021 academic year.


The PK Financial Group Leadership Award

The PK Financial Group Leadership Award is a special category to recognize the distinguished leadership and academic achievement among WOLCS alumni who are striving to become future leaders at a trade or technical school/college. The award contribution is $2500.00 and is awarded to a WOLCS alumni accepted to or currently attending an accredited trade or technical schools/colleges to help defer the tuition costs for the 2020-2021 academic year.
